Parish Council

Parish Councils are the first tier of local government and are responsible for delivering certain facilities and services to meet local needs.

Roydon Parish Council comprises 11 members and the (part-time) Clerk, who is the professional advisor and administrator to the Council. All Councillors are unpaid volunteers.

Roydon Parish Council covers Roydon, Broadley Common, Dobbs Weir and Hamlet Hill, representing a population of around 3200 people (in 2019). The Council’s aim is to safeguard and improve the quality of life of the parish as far as possible within its powers and duties. To this end Roydon Parish Council provides or supports a variety of local services including allotments, playing fields, sports facilities, street lighting, and community venues such as Roydon Village Hall and St Christopher’s Hall, Dobbs Weir. The Council also maintains various ‘green’ areas in the village and in Broadley Common. The parish council is also a statutory consultee for planning applications and aims to highlight and lobby on behalf of residents on issues which need to be addressed by other levels of local government.

The Council is funded by a “precept” drawn from the District’s Council tax – each year the Parish Council must decide on the proportion of the Council tax that it needs to levy in order to carry out its responsibilities.

Roydon PC meets monthly across the Parish including St. Christophers Hall Dobbs Weir, United Reformed Church Roydon and Roydon Village Hall. Members of the public are welcome to attend. Because the council is a statutory body, the meetings follow a set format but members of the public can speak, towards the beginning of the meeting, if they have matters they wish to raise.

In addition to their formal meetings Roydon Parish Council holds a monthly “surgery” on the second Saturday of the month, in various venues in the village. This gives local residents the opportunity to meet Parish Councillors face to face and discuss any concerns they may have.

The Clerk can also be contacted through the “contact us” section of this site or directly via email/phone.
